Wilderness Bisate was the first lodge in Rwanda to marry world-class luxury travel with once-in-a-lifetime gorilla trekking experiences. Bisate partnered with the local community in the reforestation of an iconic site bordering the Volcanos National Park and, since its inception, two indigenous tree nurseries have been established and over 2 000 trees planted. The site has dramatic views over the Bisoke and Karisimbi volcanoes rising above the park’s Afro-alpine forests, and the lodge reflects the culture of rural Rwanda in its architecture.
Wilderness Bisate has a long-term commitment to responsible eco-tourism and conservation of Rwanda’s incredible natural heritage. The Volcanoes National Park is located along the western branch of the East African Rift – one of the most important biodiversity hotspots on the continent that is home to over 60 bird and mammal species found nowhere else on earth. The most well-known and celebrated of these is the mountain gorilla, and you will have the opportunity of encountering one of 10 habituated family groups inside the park.
Other attractions in the area include Iby’wacu cultural village, the spectacular twin lakes of Buhondo and Burera, the lava tunnels of the Musanze Caves, astonishing birding, and tracking specialised endemic species like the golden monkey.
