Ol Pejeta is the largest individual Rhino sanctuary in East Africa, supporting populations of more than 70 black rhino and at least 10 white Rhinos. Lions, Leopards, Cheetah, Buffalo, Reticulated Giraffe and Elephant are also present at the Ol Pejeta. Other ungulates include the Oryx, Gerenuk, hartebeest and more than 500 different bird species can be found here. Following the establishment of a Chimpanzee sanctuary in 1993 Ol Pejeta supports the only population of Chimpanzee in Kenya. The Chimpanzee is not naturally occurring in Kenya and were rescued form war in Burundi and brought to Ol Pejeta where a sanctuary was created for them to live in. An excursion to visit the chimpanzee sanctuary is an exciting. Their crescendo of communal pant-hoot calls allows them to identify other Chimps within their territory. An interaction between the Chimps is also fascinating to watch, and it includes plenty of grooming, displays of affection and dominance and hierarchy. Most rare seen is their ability to use tools while in search for food.
